Vocabulary 3

1.  IP Address - Internet protocol address: the numeric code thatidentifies all computers that are connected to the Internet

2.  Usenet - an extensive system of newsgroups: a branch of the Internet.

3.  Account - a regular client or customer, esp a firm that purchasescommodities on credit

4.  Host - A computer system that is accessed by a user working at a remote location.

5.  FTP - File Transfer Protocol: a software protocol for exchanginginformation between computers over a network.

6.  ZIP, EXE, CAB - To create a compressed archive (a "zip file") from one or morefiles using PKWare's PKZIP or a compatible archiver. An executable binary file. A file format from Microsoft used to hold compressed files on its distribution disks.

8.  HTML - Hypertext Markup language: a set of standards, a variety ofSGML, used to tag the elements of a hypertext document.

9.  Link – A pointer from within the content of one hypertext node to another node.

10.  WYSIWYG - of, pertaining to, or noting a screen display that shows textexactly as it will appear in printed output, includingunderlining, various typefaces, as italics, line spacing, end-of-line breaks, and paragraph indentations.

11.  TXT, DOC, XLS - text file that is uploaded to a Web site's root directory and linked in the html code of the Web site.  Common spoken and written shorthand for"documentation". Often used in the plural "docs" and in the construction "doc file".   file extension used on computers running Microsoft Windows to identify files created in Microsoft Excel.

12.  Bandwidth – the transmission capacity of anelectronic communications device or system; the speed of data transfer.

13.  DNS server – Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. 

14.  Client – an application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and relies on a server to perform some operations.

15.  Bounce - used to describe an e-mail that has bounced back to the sender undelivered without having been accepted by the recipient's mail server.
